Project Summary
As part of the transformative Urban Orchard Park project in the City of South Gate, Piece by Piece was selected to design, fabricate, and install a large-scale mosaic mural along a 50-foot-long raised concrete wall in the park’s knoll area. The mural is a vibrant, community-driven artwork that celebrates the spirit of South Gate while enhancing the beauty and meaning of this reclaimed green space.
Piece by Piece engaged residents and stakeholders in the design process to ensure the mosaic reflected community identity, local history, and the cultural richness of the area. The resulting mural integrates themes of regeneration, community resilience, and environmental justice aligning with the park’s mission to restore access to nature and celebrate Indigenous Tongva heritage.
From concept to installation, Piece by Piece managed the full artistic process, coordinating closely with the City of South Gate, The Trust for Public Land (TPL), Tongva consultant River Garza, and other partners to ensure that the mosaic met design standards and installation requirements. The final work now welcomes park visitors with vibrant color, handcrafted detail, and symbolic imagery that echoes the ecological and cultural restoration goals of Urban Orchard.
This project is proudly supported by The Trust for Public Land and the City of South Gate. The Urban Orchard mosaic mural is more than public art; it is a beautiful statement to the power of community collaboration and the healing presence of nature in urban spaces.
Lead artists Dawn Mendelson and Luz Mack led the local community in developing the design and supported the Piece by Piece team in the fabrication process.
